Lady Bird Opera? What is It ?

In 1964, traveling by train from Alexandria, VA. to New Orleans, LA, the First Lady made 53 appearances in 4 days, traveling 1,628 miles to eight states in an attempt to ease tension over the civil rights legislation her husband signed into law months earlier. The whistle-stop tour is the setting for “Lady Bird: An Opera.”

Composed by   Henry Mollicone  and written by   Sheldon Harnick, (Harnick, a New York lyricist, won a Pulitzer Prize in drama in 1960 for the musical “Fiorello” and a Tony Award in 1965 for “Fiddler on the Roof.”), the Opera was commissioned by the Texas State Opera Theatre  program and the   Texas Hill Country Opera & Arts Festival  with grant funding from the   National Endowment for the Arts.

Who is Texas Hill Country Opera and the Arts?

Texas Hill Country Opera had its beginnings with the San Antonio Opera. The Hill Country Opera League was formalized in the Spring 2010 at an event Verdi in Bulverde in Bulverde, Texas. Since that time interest in Opera has been steadily growing throughout Texas Hill Country and Opera events and performances have been part of the plethora of entertainment options including:

·       “Opera On the Ranch” each Fall at The Knibbe Ranch near Spring Blanch, Texas,
·       The Summer Fredericksburg Opera Festival at The Nimitz Hotel,
·       Opera entertainment and dinners at The Sisterdale Opera House,
·       Operas at The Janey Slaughter Briscoe Grand Opera House in Uvalde,
·       Regular performances at the Brauntex Theater in New Braunfels, and
·       Operatic events throughout Texas Hill Country.

Texas Hill Country Opera & Arts was incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization in the State of Texas with the express purpose of bringing Opera and Arts entertainment to the Texas Hill Country and the region. Please join us in keeping the Queen of the arts, OPERA, alive and dynamic in Texas Hill Country.
